Temporary Relocation

Most people don't have room for them to come through properly
Wisdom teeth usually try to come through between the ages of 17 and 25. The problem is that most jaws don't have enough room for them. When there isn't space, wisdom teeth can get stuck (impacted), come through at an angle, or only partially erupt — leaving a flap of gum that traps food and bacteria.
Partially erupted wisdom teeth are the main troublemakers. They're almost impossible to keep clean, which leads to decay in the wisdom tooth itself and often damage to the healthy molar next to it. The gum around them gets infected repeatedly, causing pain, swelling, bad taste, and sometimes difficulty opening your mouth.

The position of your wisdom teeth determines how they're removed
The tooth has come through completely but may be angled towards the cheek or tongue. If it's decayed or causing problems, removal is straightforward.
The tooth has only partly come through the gum. Food and bacteria get trapped under the gum flap, causing repeated infections and decay. These almost always need removal.
The tooth is completely encased in jaw bone and hasn't erupted at all. These usually don't cause problems and can be monitored. Removal is recommended if cysts develop or the tooth is pressing on the molar in front.
More affordable than a specialist referral — same quality care
Covers the extraction procedure including local anaesthetic. Most wisdom teeth are classified as surgical extractions due to their position.
The modern version of happy gas. You breathe through a handheld inhaler to achieve a relaxed, dream-like state with pain relief. You control the dosage.
Multiple Teeth — Same Appointment
If you need more than one wisdom tooth removed, we can often do them in the same appointment. This means one recovery period instead of several, and sedation only needs to be paid once. We'll discuss the best approach after examining your X-rays.
Usually completed in a single 30-90 minute visit
We start by reviewing your X-rays (usually an OPG — a panoramic X-ray that shows all four wisdom teeth and the surrounding structures). We'll explain exactly what's going on, discuss the risks specific to your teeth, and answer any questions before we begin.
You won't feel pain during the procedure — just pressure and movement. Most patients say the anticipation is far worse than the reality.

Most people are back to normal within a few days
The most important period. Follow these closely to avoid complications.
Swelling peaks around day 2-3 then improves. Most people return to work or study within 2-3 days.
Dry Socket Warning
Dry socket occurs when the blood clot dislodges from the extraction site, exposing the bone. It causes intense throbbing pain 2-4 days after extraction. Avoid smoking, straws, and vigorous rinsing in the first 24 hours. If you develop worsening pain after the first few days, call us — we can treat it quickly.
Most wisdom teeth can be removed by your general dentist
You don't always need a specialist to have wisdom teeth removed. Experienced general dentists remove wisdom teeth regularly — including partially impacted teeth that require minor surgical technique. Having it done at your general dentist is typically more affordable and more convenient than a specialist oral surgeon referral.
At Central Brisbane Dental, our dentists assess each case on its merits. If your wisdom teeth can be safely removed in the chair with local anaesthetic and sedation, we'll do it. If the case is complex — deeply impacted in bone, very close to the nerve, or requiring general anaesthetic — we'll refer you to a trusted oral surgeon.
We'll always be upfront about which option is best for your situation. If we refer you out, we'll coordinate the follow-up care when you return to us.
