What Is a Dental Implant?

The closest thing to getting your natural tooth back

A dental implant is a titanium post that is surgically placed into your jawbone where a tooth is missing. Over 3 to 6 months, the bone fuses around the implant in a process called osseointegration — essentially making it part of your jaw. Once integrated, a porcelain crown is attached to the implant, giving you a permanent replacement that looks, feels, and functions like a natural tooth.

Sources & related:Straumann: About Implants

Unlike a bridge, an implant doesn't rely on neighbouring teeth for support — so adjacent teeth stay untouched. Unlike a denture, it's fixed in place permanently — no removing it to clean, no adhesives, no movement while eating or talking. It's the strongest and most long-lasting way to replace a missing tooth.

We use titanium implants from ADIN and Straumann — two systems with proven long-term track records backed by decades of research. Titanium is biocompatible (your body doesn't reject it) and is used throughout medicine to replace joints, pins, and plates.

Implant vs Bridge vs Denture

Three options for replacing a missing tooth — here's how they compare

Best Long-Term

Dental Implant

A titanium post fused to your jawbone, topped with a porcelain crown. Permanent, independent, and the closest to a natural tooth.

  • Fixed permanently — no removal needed
  • Doesn't affect adjacent teeth
  • Preserves jawbone from resorption
  • Lasts decades with proper care
  • Strongest option available
Fixed Alternative

Dental Bridge

A false tooth held in place by crowns cemented onto the teeth on either side. Fixed but requires preparation of adjacent healthy teeth.

  • Fixed in place — no removal
  • Requires grinding down adjacent teeth
  • Adjacent teeth bear extra load
  • Typically lasts 10-15 years

Denture (Removable)

A removable plate with a replacement tooth attached. The most affordable option, but it needs to be taken out for cleaning, can feel loose, and doesn't prevent bone loss in the jaw where the tooth is missing. Best suited as a temporary solution or when implants/bridges aren't possible.

Surgery

Implant Placement

The titanium implant is surgically placed into the jawbone under local anaesthetic. A 2-hour appointment followed by 3-6 months of healing.

  • Implant placement: $2,000
  • Minor surgery under local anaesthetic
  • 2-week review: Free

Crown

Abutment & Crown

Once the implant has integrated with the bone, an abutment is attached and a porcelain crown is made to match your natural teeth.

  • Abutment (connector): $600
  • Porcelain crown: $1,400
  • Crown fitting: Free

X-Rays: OPG & Cone Beam CT

If advanced imaging is needed, we refer you to a nearby X-ray clinic rather than charging you in-house — it's significantly cheaper with Medicare. An OPG (2D panoramic scan) is bulk billed or subsidised. A Cone Beam CT (3D scan) is subsidised by Medicare with approximately $180 out-of-pocket. Other practices charge $200-$300 for both without Medicare coverage.

95%+ Success Rate

Dental implant surgery has one of the highest success rates of any surgical procedure — above 95% for routine cases. Using proven implant systems (Straumann and ADIN) with decades of clinical data behind them further reduces risk. We monitor integration closely over the healing period to ensure your implant is solid before placing the crown.

The Implant Process — Step by Step

From consultation to finished crown — typically 4 to 6 months

Dental implant treatment is done across several appointments over 4-6 months. The healing time is the longest part — the actual chair time is straightforward. Here's what to expect:

Sources & related:Straumann: Treatment Steps

Surgical Phase:

  • Free consultation — assessment, X-ray, and treatment plan (30 min)
  • OPG and Cone Beam CT scan at X-ray clinic if needed
  • Extraction of the damaged tooth if still present
  • Bone graft if there isn't enough healthy bone (sometimes done at extraction)
  • Implant placement into the jawbone under local anaesthetic (2 hours)
  • 2-week review to check gum healing (free, 15 min)
  • 3-6 months healing — bone fuses around the implant (osseointegration)

Crown Phase:

  • Stability check — confirm the implant has integrated with the bone
  • Impression taken to fabricate the porcelain crown (45 min)
  • Crown fitting — abutment attached, crown cemented (30 min, free)
Dental implant process — surgical placement and crown restoration

It's Only Minor Surgery

Implant placement is done under local anaesthetic — the same numbing you'd have for a filling. Most patients are surprised at how straightforward it is. You'll be sore for a few days afterwards, but the procedure itself is comfortable. Penthrox sedation ($160) is available if you need it.

Same-Day Implant Placement

In some cases, the implant can be placed at the same appointment as the extraction — called immediate implant placement. If the bone around the extraction site is healthy enough, this reduces total treatment time, avoids a second surgical appointment, and can preserve more bone. We assess whether this is possible during the consultation and 3D imaging.

Complex Cases & Multiple Implants

Bone grafts, implant-retained dentures, and All-on-4

Bone Grafting

Not Enough Bone?

If the jawbone has thinned after tooth loss, a bone graft can rebuild it to support an implant. This is minor surgery that can sometimes be done at the same time as the extraction.

  • Bone grafting rebuilds the ridge
  • Can be done at extraction time
  • Additional healing time may be needed
  • We assess bone volume with 3D imaging

Multiple Teeth

Implant-Supported Bridges & Dentures

Multiple missing teeth don't always need one implant per tooth. Strategic placement of implants can support a bridge or stabilise a loose denture.

  • 3 missing teeth → 2 implants + bridge
  • Loose denture → implant clips for stability
  • Fewer implants, lower total cost
  • Far stronger than a removable denture

All-on-4 — Full Arch Replacement

If all teeth are missing (or need to be removed), All-on-4 uses just four implants to support a full fixed bridge for the entire arch. It's a stronger, better-looking, permanently fixed alternative to a full denture — no removal, no adhesives. We assess suitability at the free consultation and can refer to an oral surgeon or periodontist for the surgical phase of complex cases.

Complex Cases — Specialist Referral

We handle implant surgery and restoration in-house for straightforward cases. For complex situations — significant bone loss, proximity to nerves, or cases requiring general anaesthetic — we refer the surgical phase to a specialist periodontist or oral surgeon, then complete the crown restoration for you at our practice. This gives you the best of both worlds: specialist surgical precision and the convenience of your local dentist for the final result.
