Professional Teeth Whitening That Actually Works

Clinically proven to whiten teeth up to 8 shades lighter in a single appointment

Over time, teeth naturally discolour. Coffee, tea, red wine, smoking, certain medications, and simply getting older all contribute to staining and yellowing. If your teeth aren't as bright as they used to be, professional whitening is the safest and most effective way to restore them.

We use the Philips Zoom system for in-chair whitening — clinically proven to whiten teeth up to 8 shades lighter in a single 1.5-hour appointment. A high-concentration whitening gel is applied to your teeth and activated with a special Zoom lamp. The gel contains ACP (amorphous calcium phosphate), which is clinically proven to reduce sensitivity, protect enamel, and improve the lustre of your teeth.

For patients who prefer to whiten at home, we offer Pola Night — a professionally-guided take-home system using custom-made trays and a low-concentration gel worn overnight or for 90 minutes during the day. Results build gradually over two weeks. Both options start with a free cosmetic consultation to check that your teeth are suitable for whitening.

In-Chair Zoom vs Take-Home Whitening

Two professional options — choose based on your timeline and preference

Best Result

Philips Zoom — In-Chair

High-concentration whitening gel activated by a special lamp. Done in a single appointment at the practice. The fastest, most effective option.

  • Up to 8 shades lighter in one visit
  • Single 1.5-hour appointment
  • Dentist-controlled for safety
  • ACP formula protects enamel & reduces sensitivity
  • Results last approximately 2 years
At Home

Pola Night — Take-Home

Custom-made trays with professional-grade gel used at home over two weeks. More gradual but still significantly whiter than any over-the-counter product. Also ideal for top-up maintenance after Zoom.

  • Gradual whitening over 2 weeks
  • Custom trays for even coverage
  • Wear overnight or 90 min during the day
  • Fluoride gel to remineralise teeth
  • Convenient — whiten on your schedule
  • Top-up gel syringes available for existing patients

Why Not Both?

Some patients combine both methods for the best result — Zoom in-chair for an immediate transformation, followed by take-home trays for maintenance top-ups over time. We'll advise on the best approach for your situation at the free consultation.

Teeth Whitening Cost Breakdown

$660 for Zoom in-chair whitening — here's what's included

Free Consult

Cosmetic Consultation

A free assessment to check your teeth and gums are suitable for whitening. Identifies any issues that need addressing first.

  • Consultation: Free (normally $66)
  • Suitability check — decay, sensitivity, gum health
  • Discussion of realistic shade expectations
In-Chair Zoom

Zoom Whitening Appointment

A single 1.5-hour appointment covering everything from preparation to final result.

  • Whitening treatment (12–20 teeth): $600
  • GST: $60 (whitening attracts GST)
  • Total: $660 (normally $990)
  • Up to 3 × 15-minute rounds of whitening
  • Fluoride application after treatment

Why Does Whitening Attract GST?

Teeth whitening is classified as a cosmetic procedure, not a health service — so it's one of the few dental treatments that attracts GST. The total cost of $660 already includes the $60 GST. There are no hidden fees on top of this.

Whiten Before Veneers or Crowns

If you're planning veneers, crowns, or other restorative work, whitening should be done first. Fillings, veneers, and crowns don't change colour with whitening — but they can be colour-matched to your newly whitened teeth. Whitening after restorative work means your natural teeth lighten but your dental work stays the same shade.

Get a Clean First for the Best Result

Professional whitening works significantly better on a freshly cleaned surface. If you haven't had a checkup and clean recently, we recommend booking one before your whitening appointment. Surface staining, plaque, and tartar block the whitening gel from reaching the enamel evenly — removing them first means a more consistent, brighter result. Ask about combining a checkup & clean with your whitening when you book.

The Zoom Whitening Process

Walk in, whiten, walk out — all in a single 1.5-hour appointment

Zoom in-chair whitening is straightforward — you sit back and relax while we do the work. The entire appointment takes about 1.5 hours. Here's what happens:

Preparation:

  • Suitability assessment — confirm teeth and gums are healthy for whitening
  • Starting shade recorded for before-and-after comparison
  • Teeth pumiced (surface clean) to remove surface debris
  • Protective barriers placed over gums and soft tissues

Whitening:

  • High-concentration Zoom whitening gel applied to teeth
  • Zoom lamp activated to accelerate the whitening process
  • Up to 3 rounds of 15 minutes each (gel reapplied between rounds)
  • Gel and barriers removed

Aftercare:

  • Fluoride applied to strengthen enamel and reduce sensitivity
  • Final shade compared with starting shade — see the difference
  • Avoid eating, drinking, or brushing for 30 minutes after
  • White diet recommended for 48 hours (avoid dark foods and drinks)

Sensitivity Is Normal — And Temporary

Some patients experience mild tooth sensitivity during or after whitening. This is normal, temporary, and usually resolves within 24 hours. The Zoom gel contains ACP (amorphous calcium phosphate) which actively reduces sensitivity during the procedure. We also apply fluoride after treatment to strengthen and protect the enamel.

Tooth Mousse for Post-Whitening Care

We recommend GC Tooth Mousse after whitening to help remineralise and strengthen your enamel. It contains calcium and phosphate that are absorbed into the tooth surface, reducing sensitivity and helping your teeth recover after the whitening process. Apply at night after brushing for the first week.

Why Professional Whitening Over DIY Products?

Over-the-counter kits are regulated to low concentrations — that's why they don't work

Whitening products sold in Australian pharmacies and shops are regulated to very low concentrations of the active ingredient — low enough to be safe for unsupervised use, but too low to produce meaningful whitening. This is why most over-the-counter whitening strips, pens, toothpastes, and tray kits deliver disappointing results despite their marketing claims.

Importing higher-concentration products from overseas bypasses these safety regulations and carries real risks — gum burns, enamel damage, and uneven whitening are all commonly reported. Beauty salons and whitening lounges that offer in-chair treatments are also limited to lower concentrations and are not performed by dentists, meaning they can't assess your teeth for problems that could make whitening unsafe.

Only dentists can legally use the highest concentration whitening products in Australia. This isn't arbitrary — it's because a dentist checks your teeth for decay, cracks, and gum disease before whitening, and protects your soft tissues during the procedure. The result is dramatically whiter teeth without damage. If a shop product or beauty salon could deliver the same result safely, there'd be no reason to see a dentist for whitening — but they can't.

Avoid

DIY & Beauty Salon Whitening Risks

Products and services that promise professional results without professional oversight.

  • Over-the-counter kits — too weak to work effectively
  • Imported high-concentration gels — risk of enamel and gum damage
  • Beauty salon whitening — unqualified operators, weaker products
  • Whitening toothpastes — abrasive, not truly whitening
  • No suitability check for decay, cracks, or gum disease

How Long Does Teeth Whitening Last?

Approximately 2 years for Zoom — longer with good habits

Professional in-chair Zoom whitening typically lasts around 2 years before teeth gradually return toward their original shade. How quickly this happens depends on your habits — coffee, tea, red wine, and smoking are the main culprits for re-staining. Good oral hygiene and regular professional cleans also help maintain the result.

Many patients choose to have whitening done again after 2 years, or use take-home trays for periodic top-ups to maintain their shade between in-chair treatments. The take-home Pola Night system is ideal for this — once you have custom trays made, you can purchase individual top-up gel syringes as needed for a few nights of wear every 6–12 months to extend your Zoom result significantly.

Tips for Maintaining Your White Smile

Brush twice daily and floss regularly. Rinse with water after coffee, tea, or red wine. Avoid smoking. Keep up with regular dental check-ups and cleans — surface staining is removed during professional cleans, keeping your teeth brighter between whitening treatments. Use Tooth Mousse at night to strengthen enamel.

Whitening Limitations

Whitening works on natural tooth enamel only — it won't change the colour of fillings, crowns, or veneers. If you have visible dental work on front teeth, whitening may create a colour mismatch. Teeth discoloured by trauma (a dead nerve) or certain medications may not respond well to standard whitening. We'll be honest about what whitening can and can't do for your specific situation at the consultation.
