State of Origin Dental Problems

Now that we are approaching State of Origin Game 1, it is appropriate to discuss common State of Origin dental problems.  The annual rivalry between Queensland and New South Wales is fun to watch and great entertainment, but it is also known to cause a few dental problems.

Dental Trauma

It is not uncommon for the State of Origin players to suffer dental trauma given the intensity of the game and the physical contact.  Lucky they wear mouthguards!  What may be surprising is that we have seen patients present at the dental practice the day after a State of Origin match with broken teeth and they weren’t the ones playing in the game.  Getting a bit passionate about your State is a great thing but getting into a biff and having a tooth knocked out is a little too much.  Remember they have outlawed the biff in rugby league!  Slapping also earns you 10 in the sin bin!

Alcohol

Alcohol can be the cause of many State of Origin dental problems.  We all love a beer or two while watching State of Origin, but please don’t chip your front teeth trying to open a stubbie with your teeth.  Also, excessive alcohol consumption may lead you to do something stupid which may more often than not lead to dental trauma involving your front teeth.

Junk Food

The biggest State of Origin dental problems are caused by the junk food we eat while watching the game.  Chips, chocolate and lollies are consumed by the handful and spat out at the TV as we argue with the ref.  The continual flow of sugar washed down with a beer or coke over the 80 minutes of action is the perfect recipe for tooth decay and gum infections.  This is even more so when you don’t brush and floss and fall asleep on the floor of your mate’s lounge room.

Let’s hope for a good State of Origin Game 1.  Go the Maroons!  Queenslander!  Queenslander!  Queenslander!
